Which babies/ children 

need referral? 

  •  any child dependant on a tracheotomy deserves a chance to decannulate, which can be easy or very complex 

  • any child with any form of noisy breathing from birth or later on,  at rest or triggered 
  • A child with increased work of breathing struggling to feed and/or turning blue 
  • A child who coughs and/aspirates during feeds
  • Sleep disordered breathing with/without snoring -with/without pauses at night and with/without mouth breathing 
  • Child with voice changes 
  • Unexplained chronic cough or wheeze not responding to asthma treatment 
  • Concerning drooling with coughs, affecting feeding and quality of life 
  • Large tonsils affecting breathing with/without recurrent infections 
  • Syndromic children with craniofacial malformations are most likely to present with multiple levels of obstruction 
  • Any child with history of intubation is likely to have airway issues
